Saikat Mishra grew up in Midnapore, West Bengal, India. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Calcutta (2009–2012) and his postgraduate studies at Presidency University (2012–2014). After completing his postgraduate degree, he worked as a chemist at Mitra S.K. Private Limited, an MNC, from December 2014 to December 2015. In January 2016, he moved to Durgapur, West Bengal, to join the research group of Prof. Apurba K. Patra in the Department of Chemistry at the National Institute of Technology Durgapur, India.
He initially worked as a project scholar from January 2016 to July 2017 and subsequently pursued his doctoral studies in the same research group from July 2017 to January 2023. He received his Ph.D. in Bio-Inorganic Chemistry, with his doctoral research focused on the “Biological Relevance and Reactivity of Cu(II/I) Complexes Supported by N, S-Donor Ligands.” Following his Ph.D., he joined the research group of Prof. James P. Donahue at Tulane University, USA, as a postdoctoral researcher in May 2023.
During his postdoctoral research, which continued until March 2025, he worked on the synthesis of water-soluble tungsten and molybdenum thiolate clusters and investigated their hydrogen-evolution chemistry. In 2025, he joined Dr. Pokhraj Ghosh’s research group at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, USA, as a postdoctoral researcher, where he is currently investigating the mechanistic redox interplay of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) at transition-metal centers.
His research interests broadly encompass bioinorganic chemistry, catalysis, transition-metal coordination chemistry, redox chemistry, and the chemical biology of reactive sulfur and nitrogen species. Outside the laboratory, he enjoys listening to music, traveling, and playing cricket.
